Sea Shepherd to protect Palau’s sharks

The Sea Shepherd Conservation Society – best known for its efforts to fight Japanese whaling – is now to work with Palau to protect sharks.

The conservation agency says an agreement has been signed with the Palau government authorising Sea Shepherd to work directly with the Palauan Marine Law Enforcement Division.

Sea Shepherd vessels will patrol an area recently designated as the world’s first shark sanctuary to prevent illegal fishing and shark-finning.

It will also work with marine division officers to prosecute offenders.
